13 Year Old Boy Electrocuted At CL&P Substation

A 13-year-old boy was electrocuted Tuesday at a Connecticut Light & Power substation and police and utilities officials are investigating how the boy got into the fenced-off area.

The boy has been identified as Junus Cecunjanin of Waterbury. His family was moving into a home on Gwen Road in Southington. Neighbors reported a brief power outage about 5 p.m. An employee of CL&P, who lived near the substation, said he heard an electrical noise coming from the substation.

The worker and a CL&P supervisor investigated and found the boy’s body on the ground at the sub substation.

Jury Awards Motorcycle Accident Victim

A federal court jury in Waco, Texas has awarded $6 million to a man who was critically injured in a motorcycle accident involving a collision with a tractor-trailer.

The trucking company placed the blame for the accident on the operator of the motorcycle, who was injured when the truck driver changed lanes, striking the motorcycle and knocing the driver off the bike. The injured man, a 13 year Army veteran and former security guard, lost 4 fingers and can no longer walk without assistance. The jury award of $6 million includes damages for past and future medical expenses, injuries and physical impairment.

E.Coli Tainted Hamburger Meat Sickens Consumers

The CDC has announced that at least twenty-one people in eight states are on record as having fallen ill in the latest E. coli scare after having consumed hamburger meat tainted with E. coli bacteria.

According to reports, CDC spokeswoman Lola Russell said three cases – two in New York and one in Florida – are confirmed as being linked to the ground beef, with the other 18 cases possibly linked to the recall. The boxes recalled carry the number “Est. 9748” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were produced on June 22, July 12 or July 23.

The purveyor of the tainted product is New Jersey-based Topps Meat Company, the largest supplier of frozen patties in the United States. The company recalled this week over 330,000 lbs of frozen beef patties as a result of the E. coli outbreak.

The line of products recalled by Topps Meat Company includes 10-lb boxes of Butchers Best All-Beef patties, Kohler Foods burgers, 10-lb boxes of Sand Castle Fine Meat, 2-lb boxes of Topps 100% Ground Beef Hamburgers, and 3-lb boxes of Topps 100% Ground Beef Hamburgers. The boxes recalled carry the number “Est. 9748” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were produced on June 22, July 12 or July 23.

Topps meat products are distributed in Wal-Mart stores across the country.

Connecticut Drunk Driver Convicted Of Second-Degree Manslaughter

A Hebron man was convicted today of drunken driving and second-degree manslaughter for causing a crash on Route 85 that killed a man headed to work in Hartford.

Robert H. Furbush, 58, of Crouch Road in the Amston section of town, was found guilty by Rockville Superior Court Judge Carl J. Schuman after a seven-day non-jury trial.

Tolland State’s Attorney Matthew C. Gedansky proved to Schuman that Furbush was drunk and drove his 2002 Ford F-250 pickup across the centerline and slammed into a 1989 Dodge Dynasty driven by George Koch, 60, of Lebanon. Furbush’s pickup truck rode up onto Koch’s car, then continued on, eventually rolling onto its side.

Chinese Simplicity Brand Cribs Recalled After 3 Deaths

About one million Chinese-made, Simplicity brand cribs are being recalled after three infants died and seven were trapped when the drop side of cribs detached causing a dangerous gap, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.Failures in the crib’s drop side are due to a combination of hardware and design flaws that allow consumers to unintentionally install the drop side upside down. This installation could weaken the hardware and cause the drop side to detach from the crib, creating a gap that could lead to the entrapment and suffocation of infants.
