Triple A Reports Car Crash Fatalities In 2006

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

According to the Triple A, 42,642 people died in car crashes in 2006. This equates to about 117 deaths per day and almost 5 per hour. This is the equivalent of two jumbo jets crashing every week. The AAA attributes many of the fatalities to excessive speed, drunk driving and the failure to wear a seat belt. Triple A also reports that the costs arising from car accidents have gone up with the largest cost increase being hospital costs.

Illegal Street Drag Race Kills Eight People

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Police in Maryland said an uninvolved driver blinded by exhaust smoke kicked up in an early-morning street race plowed into a crowd of onlookers, killing eight and injuring six. The deadly wreck happened about 3:40 a.m. Saturday on State Route 210 in Accokeek, reported WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. Veteran officers called it the “worst incident” they have ever seen. Witnesses said two cars involved in an illegal street race had been revving engines and kicking up smoke, filling the roadway with white clouds. A group of onlookers then moved into the road to watch the race when a white Ford Crown Victoria slammed into the crowd. The driver told police that he was blinded by white smoke and could not see the people before striking them. Officers said the driver was not involved in the illegal race. Race observer Crystal Gaines was standing next to her 61-year-old father when the car struck. Gaines grabbed her child but could not help her father, William Gaines Sr., 61, who was among the dead. She said she had hold of his hand, but lost her grip. “He wasn’t breathing, he wasn’t moving,” she said. “His body was in pieces.” Apparently, the driver of the white car had nothing to do with the drag race either as a participant or spectator. This is a truly tragic accident and serves as a somber remainder that illegal street racing is illegal for a very good reason - it is an ultra-hazardous activity that places the lives of spectators, drivers and people simply in the area in serious danger.

Of note, under Connecticut law, all participants in an illegal street race are legally responsible for injury caused to a third party regradless as to which racing vehicle actually caused injury to the victim. In fact, in a Connecticut case where we represented a client seriously injured as a passenger in a single car accident, the driver of the vehicle that had been racing the car in which our client rode as a passenger was held liable for her injuries. The driver’s liablity was bsed upon the fact that he had been racing.

Trees Along Merritt Parkway Pose A Danger

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Trees lining the Merritt Parkway make for a scenic commute but those same trees can make a ride dangerous and even deadly if they fall in the road. State of Connecticut crews have been trimming trees after a tree limb fell on a motorist’s car Sunday night near exit 50. The motorist remains in critical condition. Last June, a New York family crashed into a downed tree in Westport. The accident killed two parents and injured their two children. Governor Jodi Rell has called for crews to take a closer look at condition of trees along the state roadway.  Given the latest incident, it appears that more extensive tree inspections are required to ensure the safety of motorists driving on the Merritt Parkway.

Florida Teenage Driver Killed In BMW M5 High Speed Crash

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Less than 12 hours before he died, Joshua Ammirato was posting messages on an Internet message board seeking advice about how to drive his 2008 BMW M5 faster. Ammirato, 18, logged onto M5board.com Thursday and Friday, asking other M5 drivers how to shift smoother in the 500-horsepower machine.
“The problem is when I’m going pedal to the metal pushing 140 and upshifting, there tends to be thud noise with the gear change,” he wrote in one post. Ammirato and four other young Marion County men were killed at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday, when the BMW M5 he was driving sailed off the end of the Greystone airstrip in Anthony and crashed into a tree. Messages on the board devoted to M5 enthusiasts show Ammirato logged on shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday as “AmericanM5.” Read more about this tragic car accident.
